A structural engineer based in London accepted a job in Madrid starting in March. She had a UK pension, a rented flat in London and shares from a previous employer.
Before the move
We fixed the residence date, applied for the inbound workers’ regime within the six-month window and planned the sale of the shares while still UK resident.
The first year
We filed a UK return under split-year treatment and the Spanish return under the special regime, with the London rent declared in both countries and relief claimed once.
One adviser, two tax offices and no income taxed twice. She now files both returns with us every year.
